Obituary for Dorothy “Dot” Platt

Dorothy “Dot” Platt, passed away on Jan, 15th 2020, at the age of 101.

She was born on Halloween 1918, in Salt Lake City, to Edith Jane McCarthy and Clarence Ervin Krause.

She married Ernest Alfred Platt on April 28, 1943. He passed away in 2006.

From the time she was a small child, she loved nature! She participated in and led many nature study and bird groups and thrilled at seeing people’s eyes open to God’s creations.  She served as President of Utah Nature Society, the Western section of the National Nature Society, taught at National Wildlife Summit in Colorado, and loved leading groups to Educational Camps in her beloved Yellowstone for fifteen years.

For many years she would teach elementary school classes about the wonders of birds, and loved being known as The Bird Lady. She loved hiking and camping in her Wee Balla Macree tent trailer, especially trips with her grandchildren. Her adventures took her to several parts of the world, where she loved learning about the nature and history of the various nations she visited. She also visited many of the states with a particular love for the beauty and nature of Alaska.

Her second favorite thing was photographing, painting, and drawing the scenes she saw in nature. She shared her talent in newsletters and Christmas letters. She also loved to sing. For many years she sang with a choral group, The Schubert Singers. In her senior years, she participated in a poetry class, and even though she could not see well, she was writing poems up until a few weeks before her passing.

She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a firm and faithful testimony of the gospel. She loved teaching in Primary and Relief Society and sharing her gospel knowledge and testimony with others. As a centenarian, she had lost her sight, hearing, and mobility, but we are sure that she is now enjoying a joyous reunion, not only with her family but with the glories of a heavenly nature. She always closed her letters and birthday cards with the same expression…which we’re sure she’d want to pass on to everyone…”Love and Blessings!”

She is survived by a son, Rob (Joyce) and daughter, Shawn (Carr) 7 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren along with many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews, preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brothers. Deep thanks to Stefanie and Ashlie from Atlas/Legacy Hospice for their loving care.

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be actually something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it!
